KENYA TOURISM FEDERATION UPDATE STATEMENT ON AIRPORT (JKIA) DISRUPTIONS ON 6TH MARCH 2019

Statement N0. 1

On 6th March 2019, industrial action by Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) resulted to operational disruptions at the main airport - Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from 3.00am to 6.00pm. Operations gradually began to return to normal at 1600hrs following the swift intervention of the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development; Kenya Airports Authority and other stakeholders.

The operational disruptions affected several flights and occasioned the affected passengers, airlines to reschedule their plans. We deeply regret for all the inconvenience caused. We laud the authorities for taking swift action to address the impasse and restore normal operations at all airports across the country in under 24hours.

Being the regions hub and gateway, JKIA has over time cultivated a reputation of innovative service standards, exemplified in the recent Category 1 status certification by the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States (FAA); and a pillar for the economic transformation of the country. As the tourism private sector in Kenya, we highly esteem these achievements; and call upon the government and all stakeholders to duly support the advancement of these gains.
