World tourism day/Kenya Tourism Week
Author: Imelda Ndomo
Date: 30 Sep 14

Spotlight on Taita Taveta County, Host Destination of World Tourism Day/Kenya Tourism Week 24th - 27th September 2014:
  • Taita Taveta County has rich history as one of the battlegrounds where World War 1 (WW1) was fought. WW1 pitted the world economic great powers in two opposing alliances, with one side allied with the British and the other with the Germans. Whilst Tanzania was under German rule, Kenya was under British rule, and the opposing sides faced off in Taita Taveta County. WW1 lasted from 1914 to 1918.
  • At the centenary commemoration of WW1 held in Taita Taveta County in August, about 25 foreign missions participated. Through their representatives in Kenya, these countries joined in hoisting their flags atop Salaita Hills to signify peace and reconciliation.
  • The commemoration served as the occasion to unveil the WW1 sites in the County  - Taveta Common Wealth Graves, European and Indian Cemeteries, the famed ‘Sniper's Baobab tree, and the hideouts near Salaita Hills - as premium tourist attraction sites.
  • Other attractions include: First inland church built at Mahoo by the Church Missionary Society in 1890s.
  • Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, both rich in biodiversity and covering a total of four per cent of Kenya's total land area.
  • Taita Hills; Yatta plateau - at 300km long, the longest lava flow in the world and an ornithological paradise that attracts migrating birds from all over the world; Lugards Falls - bizarrely eroded rocks through which the waters of the Galana River plunge into foaming rapids and crocodile -infested pools; Chyulu Hills, lava flows and caves with potential for geological and cave exploration, Mzima Springs, Njoro Springs, Ray Museum and Lake Chala.
  • Visit for more on Tsavo East & West National parks.
Dignitaries expected at this year's celebrations include: Governor of Taita Taveta County, John Mrutu; Tourism CS Phyllis Kandie; Tourism PS Ibrahim Mohamed; County Executive for Tourism Stephen Mringa and  other Tourism leaders.

Activities will include:

Day 1: Town Cleanup & Tree planting, road show, Exhibition set up & Sports Competitions - football, tug of war & Marathon
Day 2: Exhibition, Workshop on Tourism and Community Development
Day 3: Exhibition, Cultural Extravaganza
Day 4: Entertainment & Chief Guest Address
