The Ministerial Roundtable on Tourism, 14th April
Author:
Date: 13 Jun 16

The Ministerial Roundtable on Tourism held on 14th April at Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) was convened by Tourism CS Najib Balala and co-hosted by Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) and Kenya Tourism Board (KTB).

As the apex body of the tourism private sector and co-host of the forum, KTF consulted extensively with the industry through the trade associations and put together the matrix of issues deliberated by the forum.

Participation was executive level for both the public and private stakeholders; with the private sector fully represented through the 7 key tourism trade associations that make up KTF, i.e. KAHC, KATO, KATA, KAAO, Ecotourism Kenya, PERAK and KCTA.

CS Balala noted that the challenges facing tourism are an equal concern for both the public and private sector, thus the forum to cultivate solutions through consultation and partnership.

KTF Chairperson Lucy Karume noted that the ministerial roundtable on tourism becomes the benchmark of engagement between government and private sector on issues affecting tourism, and thanked the Tourism CS for the initiative.

Some of the outstanding issues flagged by the forum for redress include:-

Tourism sector levies hindering price competitiveness; Need for open skies policy to improve air access to the destination; closer linkage needed between Kenya Airways and tourism sector e.g. to align their marketing strategies; Police treatment of tourist service vehicles and operators at airports; proposed special considerations for certification of tour driver guides; criteria for classification of Hotels and Restaurants; inadequate immigration clearing points & customer service and closure of Langata road turn off to Wilson airport among others.
