KENYA AT INTERNATIONAL TOURISM BOURSE (ITB) IN BERLIN, GERMANY

Kenya is represented by 40 trade operators at the ongoing ITB travel show in Berlin

ITB Berlin is one of the largest travel trade fairs in the world and gives great opportunity to showcase tourism products and services to hosted buyers and visitors from across the world.

Speaking at the International Hotel Investment Forum (IHIF) within the auspices of ITB, Tourism CS Hon. Balala outlined the following:

Kenya’s growing competitive edge in tourism business is attributable to product diversification, value for money, enhanced infrastructure, all- round conducive weather and the warmth of the Kenyan people.

Kenya is making efforts to lower the cost of doing business through extensive business regulatory reforms intended to reduce the number of licensing requirements and to make the licensing regimes more transparent and focused on legitimate regulatory purposes.

Tourism contributes 12% of Kenya’s GDP, and stimulates several other interlinked economic sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, finance, transport, communication and SMEs and accounts for 9% of the country’s total formal employment.

Tourism is the 3rd largest contributor to our foreign exchange earnings after agriculture (tea, coffee, and horticulture) and diaspora remittances.

Kenya’s Vision 2030 aims at making Kenya one of the top ten long-haul tourist destinations globally. Attaining this status will definitely involve addressing constraints facing the sector and implementing strategic projects to improve the quality and breadth of Kenya’s tourist offerings. Further, attention will also be paid to creating an environment where tourists spend more per visit.

Tourism has potential of creating more jobs for our citizens (for every 10 visitors, 1 job is created), earning the government more tax revenue (currently about Ksh94Billion), aids in conservation of our wildlife, flora and marine – through proceeds from visits to parks and game reserves, promoting peace and tolerance through interaction the between the visitors and the locals, and reducing crime and radicalization of youths by engaging them in productive activities.

To attract both local and foreign investors in the tourism sector and tap the existing investment opportunities, the Government of Kenya provides both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives.

The Government is also undertaking various promotional activities:

Image building to promote the country as an investment destination by having national and county branding mechanisms.

Investor servicing or facilitation to help solve problems faced by existing and potential investors

Project profiling – profiling investor ready investment opportunities

Targeting or investment generation by actively seeking out investors based on national development plans

The country is currently developing a National Investment Policy to guide both incoming and existing investors.

Setting up a One Stop Center for investors to reduce the procedures and cost for investments in a bid to improve the investment environment.
