OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE NATIONAL ACTION PLAN ON BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS (NAP) - SESSIONAL PAPER 3 OF 2021

On 12th May 2023, Kenya Tourism Federation was represented by Stephen Otieno in the launch of the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP) at the Panari Hotel, Nairobi. Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KNCCI) in collaboration with Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) developed NAP, making Kenya to be the first African country to such a policy document. Professionals from various state and private organizations also participated directly and indirectly in the development of NAP. The core purpose of the policy document was noted to be:

  • Promotion of business and human rights in Kenya.
  • Enabling accomplishment of SDGs on gender equality and human rights.
  • Address different forms of abuse in conflict-affected areas in Kenya.

Importantly, it was distinctly pointed out that NAP is in alignment with Kenya Human Rights obligation laws. Also, it is not meant to create new obligations but to help private- and state-owned businesses to comply with human rights related laws.

In conclusion, businesses were urged to take the plan as an enabler rather than a hindrance to business operations.
